February 2020

Another turn in this strange start to 2020.  The Annual Bologna Children's Book Fair, which we have been attending since 2009 and have been preparing for this year, has been postponed from early April to May 4 to 7, due to the Corona Virus spread in northern Italy. Other Book Fairs and events have also been cancelled and the shut down of printing houses in China is impacting on the availability of new books.

We were thrilled to have been hosting a record 20 Australian authors and illustrators to take turns on the Creators Table on the Australian stand this year in Bologna. However, with the rescheduling of the fair, many of us can no longer attend due to commitments in May. Others, including the 12 publishers on the stand, have their decision to attend on hold, waiting for more information and advice.

It's a blow for the promotion of Australian children's books overseas but,
whatever happens, we do have the wonderful 2020 Hello! from Australia Catalogue (pictured above) at the ready to promote Australian Children's books far and wide.

Our feature picture book creator
This month we feature twelve Indigenous students from
The Great Victoria Desert, a very remote area of Western Australia .
These students from Laverton, Menzies and Tjuntjuntjara remote schools took part in the third Spinifex Writing Camp worked with singer songwriter Chris Aitken and author illustrator Ann James to create a stunning new picture book Hello, Hello published by the ILF Indigenous Literacy Foundation and released this month.
Available for sale now $24.99

We want to celebrate this stunning illustrated story by these students as well as show the process of how this beautiful picture book was created.
It's quite a story!
The book originated from an ILF Community Literacy Project at the Spinifex Writing Camp at Tjuntjuntjara School in the Great Victoria Desert of Westerna Australia. The process started by creating the words for a song with Chris Aitken; experimenting with picture making with Ann James; conceptualising a picture book format with the ILF team; formatting, designing and typsetting with designer Lee Burgemeetre: scanning and prepress work by the Splitting Image in Melbourne and printing by 1010 Printing International Limited in China

You can see more detail of this process on the Event Section of our website or
if you are in Melbourne you have the opportunity to see some of it first hand with
Ann James at the Melbourne Book Market days through March.

Copyright Agency makes investment in arts criticism and reviews

The Copyright Agency, in partnership with the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas, has announced funding of $150,000 to support the publication of more arts reviews and criticism in the Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), the AgeBrisbane Times and WA Today.
The $150,000 is in addition to spending by News Corp and Nine on arts and review coverage. At SMH and the Age, the grant and investment money will be put towards 100 additional reviews focused on books, plays and visual arts from around Australia.
The mastheads will also be recruiting critics-in-residence for books, visual arts and theatre, to add to the existing stable of critics.
Judith Neilson Institute executive director Mark Ryan said, ‘Coverage of Australia’s arts scene is important, and our support will generate more reviews and criticism, not just for Melbourne and Sydney audiences, but across the country.'
Copyright Agency CEO Adam Suckling said, ‘Our job is to support Australian creativity by ensuring that the rights of publishers, writers and visual artists are respected and that they receive fair payment for use of their work.’
Parliamentary Book Club - Dark Emu

The inaugural Parliamentary Book Club started in February with Bruce Pascoe coming to Canberra to speak to and answer questions from Federal Parliamentarians.
An initiative of the Australian Publishers Association (APA), Australians nominated the book they felt their federal members should read, with Pascoe’s Dark Emu being selected.
Robbie Egan from Australian Booksellers Association attended and reported …
Bruce Pascoe spoke about the Dark Emu journey that saw him seek a greater understanding of his family history, and of the institutionalised misconceptions
Australia has perpetuated about our indigenous peoples.

Amongst the attendees was Linda Burney MP (Barton), Senator Pat Dodson (WA), Celia Hammond MP (Curtin) and Senator Janet Rice (VIC). Hammond said that,
as someone from the conservative side of politics, ‘I expected to be challenged by
Dark Emu, and I was. But in a really positive way.’
I cannot summarise the breadth and depth of the conversation here.
Suffice it to say it was an historic event that brought a diverse group of
politicians together to discuss, in a civil manner, issues of national importance.

You can recommend what you would like this group to read next.
Email them your local MP directly or tag them on socials.
Let them know your recommendation for a reading nation.
Young Dark Emu: a truer History is a picture book version of Dark Emu.
It is published by Magabala Books and is available for purchase here.

Recommened also are the Copyright Agency Reading Australia teachers’ notes
for this book.
