Copyright Agency makes investment in arts criticism and reviews
The Copyright Agency, in partnership with the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas, has announced funding of $150,000 to support the publication of more arts reviews and criticism in the Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), the Age, Brisbane Times and WA Today.
The $150,000 is in addition to spending by News Corp and Nine on arts and review coverage. At SMH and the Age, the grant and investment money will be put towards 100 additional reviews focused on books, plays and visual arts from around Australia.
The mastheads will also be recruiting critics-in-residence for books, visual arts and theatre, to add to the existing stable of critics.
Judith Neilson Institute executive director Mark Ryan said, ‘Coverage of Australia’s arts scene is important, and our support will generate more reviews and criticism, not just for Melbourne and Sydney audiences, but across the country.'
Copyright Agency CEO Adam Suckling said, ‘Our job is to support Australian creativity by ensuring that the rights of publishers, writers and visual artists are respected and that they receive fair payment for use of their work.’ |

Parliamentary Book Club - Dark Emu
The inaugural Parliamentary Book Club started in February with Bruce Pascoe coming to Canberra to speak to and answer questions from Federal Parliamentarians.
An initiative of the Australian Publishers Association (APA), Australians nominated the book they felt their federal members should read, with Pascoe’s Dark Emu being selected.
Robbie Egan from Australian Booksellers Association attended and reported …
Bruce Pascoe spoke about the Dark Emu journey that saw him seek a greater understanding of his family history, and of the institutionalised misconceptions
Australia has perpetuated about our indigenous peoples.
Amongst the attendees was Linda Burney MP (Barton), Senator Pat Dodson (WA), Celia Hammond MP (Curtin) and Senator Janet Rice (VIC). Hammond said that,
as someone from the conservative side of politics, ‘I expected to be challenged by Dark Emu, and I was. But in a really positive way.’
I cannot summarise the breadth and depth of the conversation here.
Suffice it to say it was an historic event that brought a diverse group of
politicians together to discuss, in a civil manner, issues of national importance.
You can recommend what you would like this group to read next.
Email them your local MP directly or tag them on socials.
Let them know your recommendation for a reading nation.
