Report on Bologna Children’s Book Fair March 26 to 29
Since 2009 Books Illustrated has supported publishers with the Hello! from Australia exhibition of illustrations and picture books, promoting our culture and drawing attention to the diversity and excellence of our creators, publishers and the Australian children’s book industry. This year, focusing on Indigenous publishing for children in Australia, we selected an illustration by Lisa Kennedy from Welcome to Country,  published by Walker Books, to be printed across he 5 metre panel backdrop to of the collective Australian stand creating a unique Australian presence.
A record number of 13 independent Australian publishers were on the stand including Allen & Unwin and two Indigenous publishers, Magabala Books and The Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Indigenous illustrator Bronwyn Houston was one of the 12 creators who worked on the popular Creators’ Table, also including Gus Gordon, Gabrielle Wang, Ann James, Jedda Robaard, Anne Ryan, Maree Coote, Mike Dumbleton, Lee Burgemeestre, Max Landrak, Owen Swan and Felicity Marshall.

REIMAGINE—the World according to Children’s Books

It includes the works of Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors and artists including Joshua Button, Leigh Hobbs, Robert Ingpen, Ann James, Van T Rudd, Tai Snaith, Anne Spudvilas, Shaun Tan and Anna Walker.

Presenting original artworks and source material for some of Australia’s most acclaimed contemporary children’s books, the exhibition explores the wonderfully inspiring images and texts through which concepts of humanity, nature, caring, cultural difference and belonging, and the challenging realities of loneliness and intolerance, are introduced to children. Further information
