This image of women and children at the waterhole is one of Lisa Stewart's illustrations from Welcome to Country, written by

Hello! from Australia collective stand at the Bologna Children's Book Fair this year.
This year the Hello! from Australia display highlights
Australian Indigenous publishing for children
at the 2018 Bologna Children’s Book Fair
March 26 to 29, 2018.

The annual Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the largest international book fair specialising in children’s books, most prestigious for its focus on book illustration. A record number of 13 independent Australian publishers will be at the Hello! from Australia collective stand this year. Three of these are nominated for the Best Publisher Award: Oceania Region - Magabala Books, Scribble and Windy Hollow Books.

Last year funding received from the Australian Government Department of Communication and the Arts, and administered by Allen & Unwin, ensured that an Australian Collective stand can be continued at this annual fair until 2020.

Since 2009 Books Illustrated has curated the Hello! from Australia exhibitions and displays for the stand promoting Australian culture and drawing attention to the diversity and excellence of our creators, publishers and the Australian children’s book industry. This year, in addition to the promotion of new books and rights sales for publishers, there will be a focus on Indigenous publishing for children in Australia - celebrating the interest and growth in this area right across the publishing industry. Two important publishers of Australian Indigenous books for children, Magabala Books & the Indigenous Literary Foundation, will be part of the collective stand. Indigenous author illustrator Bronwyn Houston will work on our popular Creators’ Table, one of the dozen Australian creators visitors can meet on the stand, including Gus Gordon, Gabrielle Wang, Ann James, Jedda Robaard, Anne Ryan, Maree Coote, Mike Dumbleton, Lee Burgemeestre, Max Landrak, Owen Swan and Felicity Marshall.

The 2018 Hello! from Australia illustrated catalogue represents over 30 Australian publishers and 170 authors & illustrators and was launched on March 1.
The print version will be distributed widely throughout this most important Book Fair, on the Collective Australian stand - Hall 25, Aisle 8, Stand 66.

On line it can be accessed on ISSUU  https://issuu.com/booksillustrated/docs/helloaust2018issuu

Continung the celebration of the anniversary of ANZAC and the focus on WW1 and other wars, a new book The Little Stowaway written by Vicki Bennett, illustrated by Tull Suwannakit and published by Scholastic Books, is based on a true story.
The First World War is over. A brave and determined little French orphan, Honore, wanders through the snow, cold and hungry and lost. When he stumbles on the Australian Flying Corps and meets airman, Tim Tovell, his life is changed forever.  This is the story of a remarkable little stewy and his journey to his new home in Australia.
Tull Suwannakit, in illustrating this story, has drawn on photos, letters and memorabilia which adds a touching authenticity to the telling of this story.

The New England Illustration Prize is going national!
The New England Illustration Prize, which is in its third year, is going national in 2018. The Prize, which opened on Monday March 5 for entries, was created and is run by the New England Writers’ Centre, which also runs the very successful national writing award, the New England Thunderbolt Prize for Crime Writing.
Illustrators resident in any part of Australia, and at any stage of their careers, are invited to create a colour illustration, suitable for a children’s picture book, on the theme of  ‘A fun day out’.
New England Writers’ Centre Chair, Sophie Masson, commented: ‘We are really excited at launching the Prize nationally, and look forward to getting fantastic entries! ...  we have worked hard over recent years to make sure visual storytellers—that is, illustrators—are included in the opportunities we offer.

MARCH -  with the Australian Children's Laureate
MORRIS GLEITZMAN
'You may have noticed that one of the things I've already been inspired to do by my predecessors is create a Laureate's calendar. It's a sort of mission statement broken down into twelve monthly parts. Mine is about stories, and how they work, and the things they give us, and how they make us. Lots of themes and ideas that I hope will start lots of conversations. And thanks to Andrew Weldon's wonderful drawing skills and sense of humour, they're fun to look at too.'
Morris Gleitzman

This month, the calendar tells us, is Me-In-Your-Shoes March.
