In August,The CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) Book Week celebrations, including the announcement of the prestigious Book of the Year Awards, highlighted the importance of books and reading around Australia. Our congratulations again to all those Illustrators, authors and publishers who had books that gained shortlisting, honours or were winners in these awards.

This month sees this promotion of books and reading continued through three national events - .
• Indigenous Literacy Day - Sepember 5
• HUSH foundation 18th CD launch - September 16 & 17
• National Reading Hour - September 20

Most vital human functions are accompanied by pleasure, and reading is no exception. I’m proud and delighted to be an Australian Reading Hour Ambassador for 2018, and to use the opportunity to gently remind the adult community that young people deserve that pleasure every day. They also need it, because no other activity will better equip young people to embrace their futures in a sometimes dark and uncertain world with optimism, resolve and creativity. Our stories have saved us in the past, and in the minds of young readers they can again.”
Morris Gleitzman  -  Australian Children’s Laureate and 2018 Australian Reading Hour Ambassador

                                              Science Gallery Melbourne

We were inspired a couple of years ago to hear about the proposal to develop a new gallery in Melbourne that would aim to 'inspire and transform curious minds through the collision of art and science'. Although the gallery is not opening until 2020 an exciting program is already being developed ...

Science Gallery Melbourne will be a bold addition to our city, exploring the collision of art and science, and playing a vital role in shifting our understanding of science, art and innovation.

Part of the acclaimed Global Science Gallery Network, and embedded in the University of Melbourne, the Gallery will be a dynamic new model for engaging 15-25 year olds with science. The Gallery will open in 2020 as part of a new innovation precinct being developed by the University of Melbourne on the corner of Grattan Street and Swanston Street

In the lead up to 2020, pop-up exhibitions will be happening on and off campus. Blood was the first exhibition, held in August 2017 in the Frank Tate building at the University of Melbourne.
Next is Perfection
Through the lens of artists, musicians, mathematicians, architects, designers, psychologists and surgeons, Science Gallery Melbourne will explore what it means to pursue perfection in a non-perfect world.

September News & Events
Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, stories and languages. The day brings together children from some of the most isolated communities across Australia to share the stories they have written, illustrated and published with our Foundation. Alongside our ambassadors, students, booksellers, publishers, libraries and partners, we acknowledge, honour and celebrate the rich culture of the remote communities we work with, and celebrate their work.
On this day, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation ask that attention is focused on the disadvantages experienced in remote communities and that funds are raised for more equal access to literacy resources

                                                National Reading Hour
On Thursday September 20, all Australians are encouraged to pick up a book and read for one hour - on their own or with their children.
Australians are being encouraged to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading, to take the time to learn, grow, escape and relax. Events in every state are listed on the website.

Some facts from the National Reading Hour website  - 'In children, reading has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea.'

So, why not give it a go!

September with the Australian Children's Laureate Morris Gleitzman
Young characters are often on a truth-seeking mission, and some of the truths they discover can make other people very uncomfortable. Specially if these truths get blurted out ... read more about this month's theme and the Laureate's program  at                                                     http://www.childrenslaureate.org.au
e.g. Morris and past Laureate Alison Lester on Saturday Sept 8 will be presenting at the Brisbane Writer's Festival and, as The Australian Childrens' Laureate and Reading Ambassador for the 2018 National Reading Hour, he'll be presenting a talk at Parliament House about the importance of Reading on September 17.

Books Illustrated is an enthusiastic supporter of the Australian Children's Laureate program
