Congratulations again to the creators and publishers who were recognised in this year's Children' Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year Awards announced in August. There are many opportunities in September to continue this celebration of the importance our children's book industry in developing our culture and a strong future for our country.

National events include
Indigenous Literacy Day -September 6

State events include

The StoryArts festival - September 2 – 10, 2017 Qld the Ipswich in Qld. This festival features award winning authors, illustrators, storytellers and performers from all over Australia -  from every state and territory except NT and special guests from Singapore and New Zealand. This year many presenters have created story with a Science, Technology Engineering and Maths focus. Add the Arts and you have STEAM!

September is the last month for the Federation Square Book Market!

The management at Federation Square have announced that, due to programing changes, the Atrium space at the square will no longer be available for the weekly Book Market - so the traders are looking for a new home.

We are disappointed with this decision, as a book market in the heart of Melbourne with regular interstate and oversaes visitors, seems such a good fit as Melbourne is a UNESCO City of Literature.  The Saturday Book Market has been a special part of Books Illustrated's promotion of Australian picture books and illustrators for over 15 years with a guest illustrator each month - usually promoting a new book or print.
Visitors have valued the opportunity to meet practicing artists and ask those questions they've always wanted to - what it’s like to work as an illustrator or author for children’s books ...

So for our finale in September we'll have our regular stand at the market on September Saturdays 2,16, 23 & 30 (from 11am to 5pm).
We'll e featuring guest illustrators on Saturday 2 & Saturday 23!

Meet author /Illustrator Gabrielle Wang between 12 noon & 3pm

Gabrielle Wang is an author and illustrator born in Melbourne of Chinese heritage. Her maternal great grandfather came to Victoria during the Gold Rush and her father from Shanghai. Her stories are a blend of Chinese and Western culture with a touch of fantasy.

Gabbi will be promoting her latest novel The Beast of Hushing Wood  published by Penguin Books, 2017

A powerful  story about Ziggy Truegood, a young girl who has a premonition that she will drown on her 12th birthday. Thought-provoking and engaging, Hushing Wood is a lovely blend of action, fable and magic- realism.

An exerpt from The Neverending Bookshelf review
...For one, it’s illustrated! I can’t remember the last novel I read that had illustrations scattered throughout the pages and so I really enjoyed the illustrations that spanned everything from a two page spread to small chapter style headings. Not being familiar with the author’s previous work, I wasn’t aware at the time of reading that Wang is both the book's author and illustrator and looking back knowing this gives the book a larger than life feeling. You can literally see and read the tale unfold before your eyes as the author intended it to be and that’s kind of magical in itself..

Her Chinese heritage influences all her work and she likes to include Chinese philosophy and folktales in her novels including The Wishbird  published by Penguin Books and picture book, Race for the Chinese Zodiac,   illustrated and designed by Sally Rippin & Regin Abos, published by Black Dog Books.
Several delightful limited edition prints are available for sale from these books.

Indigenous Literacy Day &The Great Book Swap
will be celebrated Australia-wide

We want to encourage all Australians to join in The Great Book Swap and make a donation to The Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Help the ILF to raise $200,000 to buy 200,000 books for children in remote Australia, and to translate books into first languages which will help close the literacy gap in remote Australia.

From Ann James
I’ll be celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day on September 6 at the State Library of WA in Perth!
We’ll be launching
I Open The Door – A fabulous picture book, written and illustrated by children at The Second Spinifex Writers Camp in Tjuntjuntjara in remote WA,. It was organised by The Indigenous Literacy Foundation in collaboration with the marvellous Tjuntjuntjara School in 2016. For four days, ten amazing kids from Mt Margaret, Menzies, Laverton, Tjuntjuntjara and Melbourne, worked and played together. With some help and inspiration from author illustrators, Gregg Dreise, Judy Watson and me, they made magic with words and pictures - I Open The Door.
I Open the Door, published by the ILF in 2017,  will now be read and shared by children all around Australia!  You can order it, and the first Spinifex Writers Camp picture book, The Goanna Was Hungry, from Books Illustrated.

One hour, one day – The Australian Reading Hour  - Thursday September 14
Pick up a book and read for just one hour on your own or with your children

The idea is simple. On Thursday September 14, 2017, stop what you’re doing for one hour and pick up a book. The aim of the Reading Hour is for Australians to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading. In children, it has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, it has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea!

Booksellers, libraries, and teachers please register events and Contact the Australian Reading Hour to get involved.
