January 2020

We start this New Year with deep concern for those affected by the devastating bushfires around Australia and hope for urgent support of all sorts.
A positive outcome is the overwhelming awareness of the urgent changes that must be made to the ways we live with the land and oceans and air.
People all over have been responding with empathy and generosity and many appeals have started and will be ongoing initiatives to support.

Two appeals you might like to consider supporting:

Books for Bushfires is a national initiative of the Childrens' Book Council of Australia recognising that story - and story in books in particular - can effect real change
in both adults and children.

The CBCA has partnered with
GIVIT to raise donations for the purchase of books for fire affected families and communities. Using the Australian Booksellers Association's  Find a Bookshop search, GIVIT will make purchases from stores in these regions, supporting local business as well as the recipents of the books.

Support this appeal by donating money to buy books for children and young adult affected by the bushfire crisis.
• Donate to the CBCA's partners at GIVIT http://www.givit.org.au/
• Click on the 'Click here to give Money' section
• Then select 'Books for Bushfires' from the drop-down list.

The CBCA's Notable and Award book lists will be valuable guidance for selecting books for this appeal.   #booksforbushfires

The Secret Home

The Secret Home is a true story, presented as a fable.
It tells of the author’s father when he was a boy, and there was a war. Living in an underground dwelling for three years, he and his parents survive with the help of some kind and courageous strangers.
Illustrated with rich and evocative artwork, this book resonates deeply
with readers of all ages.
It is a profound lesson from the life of two families – one hiding, one sheltering -
in our human ability to risk and to be generous at times of upheaval and change
