National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually
by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year
a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author
and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools,
pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other
places around the country.
Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event
that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using
an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes,
and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for
Foundation to Year 6.
This year's picture book is Alpacas with Maracas, written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove, published by Koala Books.

Morris Gleitzman's Stories Make
Us Calendar
The May theme is Stories Make us Determined
'Our
favourite characters in our favourite stories don’t give up. Well,
maybe at first if they have the sort of problems that make them want to
run and hide and pretend the problem isn’t there. We all know what that
feels like. But how often have you read a story with a main character
who's still hiding from his or her problems on the last page? Well, OK,
Felix in my book Then, but he's got Nazis to keep out of the way of
and he's certainly not pretending they don't exist ...'
Visit the Laureate website for
Morris's thoughts on the theme, great reading
suggestions and book related ideas.
