The Bologna Children's Book Fair - April 1 to 4
Clair Hume (Affirm Press), Lucia Masciullo, Davina Bell and Allison Colpoys
at the Creators Table on the Hello! from Australia Stand.

 Hello! from Australia

This year we were pleased to be part of the Australian Collective stand showcasing Australian children's books and culture. 11 independent publishers worked at selling rights and 15 visiting Australian creators of children's books, including our current Children's Laureate Morris Gleitzman, provided a friendly buzz to the stand, engaging with passers by as they worked on the Creators Table. We all enjoyed experiencing many of the other events at this year's book fair, including the annual illustration exhibition, the International Laureate Summit, the exhibition of this year's feature country, Switzerland, the focus talks and exhibition on board books for the very young and the announcement of the shortlist for the 2020 IBBY Hans Christian Andersen Award. Congratulations to one of our attending publishers, Scribble who won the Bologna Prize for Best Children’s Publisher of the Year in the Oceania category.

Andrea Hanke, editor of Think Australian, who was also part of the stand this yearand she reported in Books & Publishing on April 18 that, 'Australian publishers have reported an ‘upbeat’ Bologna Children’s Book Fair, with middle-grade books continuing to dominate the market, and kindness and environmental themes emerging as new trends.'

More photos and information on our website in the Events section.

We'd like to share a couple of stories that show the importance of international connections and cultural exchanges possible at such an event and what makes these events all the more worthwhile ...

Anna Walker was one of the author /illustrators who attended the fair this year and was rostered on to work on the Creator's Table. She was both surprised and overwhelmed when teachers from a primary school in Italy visited the fair specially to present her with a library bag featuring an illustration by her. In the past year they had been in contact with Anna about her books they read with children and loved. Now every child in their school has an Anna Walker library bag!
We were also very moved by the story of a surprise visit to the New Zealand Stand.
In response to the terrorist attack in Christchurch New Zealand, Frances Plumpton, accepted this bouquet of roses with hand-written cards. A very special gift from Muslim publishers!
Illustration Inspiration
We couldn't help being inspired by illustrations we saw in the annual Bologna Illustration exhibition. We purchased the annual Bologna Illustration Catalogue which we are happy to share with anyone who would like to see it ...
We came across a wonderful display of Kamishibai in the Italian publishers section
Handmade and original handpainted designed 'stage sets' - and  beautifully illustrated sets of story sheets published byAssociazione Kamishibai Italia. WOW!
OTHER MAY EVENTS

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
This year's picture book is Alpacas with Maracas, written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove, published by Koala Books.
Starting in May, CBCA Victoria is hosting several judge's talks aimed at sharing information about the books selected in the Award categories and the judging process for the 2019 CBCA Book of the Year Awards. The first in Melbourne is Tuesday 28th May, commencing at 6.30pm at SLAV Headquarters, The Dream Factory in Footscray with Victorian based Judges -Mandy Cooper,

Morris Gleitzman's Stories Make Us Calendar
                             The May
theme is Stories Make us Determined

'Our favourite characters in our favourite stories don’t give up. Well, maybe at first if they have the sort of problems that make them want to run and hide and pretend the problem isn’t there. We all know what that feels like. But how often have you read a story with a main character who's still hiding from his or her problems on the last page? Well, OK, Felix in my book Then, but he's got Nazis to keep out of the way of and he's certainly not pretending they don't exist ...'

Visit the Laureate website for Morris's thoughts on the theme, great reading                                             suggestions and book related ideas.
