Our Indigenous focus continues this month as we report on the recent visit Ann James and Laureate Leigh Hobbs made to the Nyikina Mangala Community School in the West Kimberley, Westren Australia. This great oportunity for them both to be part of a creative interaction with kids and staff through art and story was organised by the Association of Independent Schools in Western Australia (AISWA). Evertone had a ball. Their illustrated report will soon be up on www.childrenslaureate.org.au.

NAIDOC Week runs from July 2 to July 9. Its theme, Our Languages Matter, focuses us to learn more about the importance of Indigenous languages in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and by transmitting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites through story and song.
We are always grateful to our local Port Phillip Citizens for Reconciliation who keep us informed about events and ways to be involved and learn more, and there are so many opportunities for us to do this during NAIDOC week this year!

We have quite a collection of books by Indigenous creators - picture books in particular - along with some stunning limited edition prints. Visitors are welcome to our showroom to browse and purchase.

Our guest illustrators for July are promoting their stunning new picture books. New Limited edition prints from these books will be launched on the day they present at the Federation Square Book Market.

Saturday July 8 - Karen Briggs
2pm to 5pm

A highly recognised designer and artist working from Adelaide, Karen now also illustrates picture books.
She is a decendant of the Yarta Yorta people whose ancestral homeland radiates from the junction of the Goulburn amd Murray Rivers in north east Victoria.
Her first book Kick with my left Foot , written by Paul Sedden published by Allen & Unwin in 2015, was shortisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia's (CBCA) Crichton Award for new illustrators.

Karen's new book, The Rabbit-Hole Golf Course, written by Ella Mulvey and published by Allen & Unwin was officially released on July 1.
This is a warm, funny story, with a fantastic rhythmic read-aloud text: 'In the big old ute, on the long red road, in the desert of my home, we all set off for the rabbit-hole golf course. Our legs bump and our digging sticks click.' It's based on the real-life experiences of the author who spent part of her childhood in the desert in Ernabella, or Pukatja, an Indigenous community 30 km south of the Northern Territory border.

Karen Briggs’ bold, child-centred illustrations are packed with the warm desert colours of outback Australia and lively activity of the Aunties and kids. They link beautifully with Ella Mulvey’s text, highlighting the sounds and sights of the desert and her playful rhythms. ‘Bump click, Thump tick, Shake hop,Pinch pop, Dig tap, Swing clap.' It's perfect for preschool story time and leads naturally to word and musical play and fun with nature.

Saturday July 15 - Jane Tanner
2pm to 5pm

Jane is a renowned illustrator with many award-winning books over her long creative career which include, There's a sea in my Bedroom , Drac &the Gremlin, The Wolf and, most recently,The Soldier's Gift. She is both author and illustrator of Playmates, Isabella's Secret, Ride with Me, Just Jack, Love from Grandma and Lily and the Fairy House. Jane's books have won or been shortlisted for many prestigious awards, including the CBCA Book of the Year Awards in the categories of Picture Book of the Year, Younger Readers and Early Childhood.

Jane's latest book, Storm Whale, written by Sarah Brennan and published by Allen & Unwin, was released in June.
It is a captivating and beautifully illustrated story about three sisters who find a stranded whale on the beach. The powerful, poetic text, is wonderful to read aloud, and Jane's illustrations full of life and emotion. Storm Whale celebrates the majesty and vulnerability of nature and our place in it. Books Illustrated Touring Exhibitions

Several of our touring exhibitions are still out and about in regional galleries and libraries around the country and some are due to close soon.
In Victoria, The Many Story Treehouse exhibition finishes at Hamilton Gallery on July 16. This has been showing in tandem with an exhibition of work by Trace Bella from her fabulous book Rockhopping.

Leigh Hobbs: Charcters from the drawing board
A new Books Illustrated print exhibition suitable for libraries and schools.

This exhibition has recently been curated to support the Laureate Leigh Hobbs' tour of LINC libraries in Tasmania. After the Tasmanian tour finishes in September it will be available for hire - check details here

The Papunya dot is a powerful symbol of social and cultural identity in Aboriginal art and culture. A new exhibition at Sydney College of the Arts opening Wednesday July 5. A group of artists including Bronwyn Bancroft, harness the power that the dot holds for Aboriginal people, as a starting point to explore their own beliefs and ideas that drive them as artists in Australian society.
